One could say that another reason for the fall of the Roman Empire was excessive military spending. The government wanted to have the best military to protect the empire, but to have that, the taxes raised incredibly to pay for necessities. The people of Rome could not always pay those high taxes. Spending so much money on the armies meant there was less money to spend on resources for other things such as public housing and the quality of roads (Fall of the Roman Empire). The needed protection of the borders was a heavy burden on the shoulders of the empire's soldiers. The borders were exposed to constant attacks and the volunteer soldiers did not want to keep fighting without getting paid. Thus the government had to pay men to fight which was costing lots of money. Then the drain of money raised the price of taxes which contributed to the Fall of Rome.
